COMPLETED FEATURE SCREENPLAY: A coming-of-age drama about two high school boys who are like oil and water, yet come together to mask the dysfunction in their lives.
COMMENTS: My first screenplay. It began as a very brief scene in 2006, evolved into a short script, then as a feature. It went through 10 drafts before I was happy with the result. I still tinker with it here and there (as I do with all my screenplays – as none of them are ever really finished are they? There is always something that triggers a switch that makes you go back and change something, the smallest little thing that may make all the difference).
This was originally titled ‘Free Falling’ – not after the Tom Petty song. I changed it to ‘Lost Together’ – not after the Blue Rodeo song, but because the two lead characters really are lost together.
COMPLETED FEATURE SCREENPLAY: A road trip comedy in the vein of 'Little Miss Sunshine' involving a contest winner who wins the chance to meet her favourite singer.
COMMENTS: This script began as just a title way back in the 1980s. Since then, it has evolved into a short story and into a screenplay. I love the cadence of the title with all the ‘M’s which is why the title has stayed with me for so many years. I’ve always wanted to write a comedy that involved a road trip with lots of quirky, goofy characters. Here it is.
COMPLETED FEATURE SCREENPLAY: A social/political, satirical farce based on the hyper-conservatism in the United States.
COMMENTS: This was the screenplay that saved me from a severe bout of writer’s block which I had been suffering from for at least 1 1/2 years. That first screenplay that I wrote took a lot out of me, after all the drafts I had written, so it was no surprise I needed a break. But I started to get worried when I just couldn’t write – anything.
Then, this wacky script came along. I began it as a horror, then as a horror/comedy, then quickly realized that what was coming out was complete over-the-top farce, so I just ran with it. When I finished, I just kept going – writing two more comedies that year and I’ve written a screenplay a year ever since. This is the screenplay that saved my writing career, so it will always be very special to me.
COMPLETED FEATURE SCREENPLAY: Semi-autobiographical fiction based on fact about a mailman who loses his sanity. A future novel adaptation.
COMMENTS: The lead character is my Howard Beale from ‘Network’ who suddenly snaps one day in a ‘I'm as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore’ episode. I’ve ramped up and gone over the top with the things that drive him over the edge, including his wacky customers and what a mailman endures during the course of a day. *Previously titled 'Postal'.*
COMPLETED FEATURE SCREENPLAY: A fascist United States government attempts to orchestrate a futuristic holocaust.
GENRE: Sci-fi Thriller
COMMENTS: This is my summer blockbuster script about a futuristic holocaust. A classic good versus evil story. I’ve always been into sci-fi and I told myself that if I ever wrote something in that genre, I’d always want to set it in the future on earth, but with no aliens or scenes in space. Part of the title comes from the film ‘Murder by Decree’ – a decree being an order issued by head of state. I just love the word. And the title fits perfectly with what the film is about.
